This painting felt like a fight between two versions of myself as an artist. One side wanted to stay in the safe, tight, refined style I’d always worked in relying heavily on reference images, realistic colours, and control. The other side wanted to let go, trust my instincts, and paint in a way that felt more honest and current. The shift in my artistic priorities has mirrored what’s been happening in my life. The more I’ve grown into myself, the more I’ve learned to trust my own intuition and my own interpretation. I see myself, growing and evolving and ever changing.
